Wrestling is one of the more unique sports that there are at East Chapel Hill High School. It incorporates several different techniques and fighting styles, even aspects of jiu jitsu.
It is about halfway through the wrestling season and the ECHHS Wrestling team has had their greatest number of wrestlers in years. The team consists mostly of younger students with only two juniors and seniors. The team currently has 10 wrestlers on the team that fill 9/14 of the weight classes. Because of the boost in numbers the team has been able to compete in a more rigorous conference. The tougher competition has allowed for the team to improve overall.
Wrestling is different than other sports in the fact that it is so team oriented yet everyone competes individually. The sport includes a mix of speed, strength, endurance, technique and intensity that is very physically demanding. The long intensive meets and practices enables the team to create a strong bond for one another.
Autumn is a freshman female wrestler at East that wrestles for the 126 weight class. This is her first year wrestling but she is dedicated and is learning quickly.
“My favorite aspect of wrestling would have to be the people. Coming into a mostly male dominated sport and being inexperienced was definitely nerve wrecking for me but the coaches and upperclassmen on the team help me really try and open up. I’ve never done an individual sport and compared to team sports, I feel so much more supported after the match.” Said Autumn Coles.
The coaching staff would like to see even more newcomers in the next year and encourages people to join.
“Wrestling brings in so many different aspects of athletics. This is what makes it such a fun and interesting sport because anyone who is willing to put in work can become great at it.” Said Coach Timothy Clark.
The team hopes to maintain its current numbers and grow even further. Come out and support East Wrestling Wildcats!
