    Julia attempts to learn soccer

The night before the game against Chapel Hill, even though the East men’s soccer team had already been riding a wave of wins, there was no slacking off in practice. Sure, because this is East, as I was watching their warm ups there was an intense discussion of the rhetorical triangle at the same time as the wind sprints, but even when the coach said that anybody could take a break when they need to, nobody slowed down. Though they lost to Chapel Hill in the conference finals, it was somewhat unexpected that a team who saw 14 players graduate last year could be so successful. So how did this…

    Julia tries to learn volleyball

The 2018 volleyball team is gathered in the CIC, watching footage from a past game. Head coach Rachel Kline pauses the video for a second to point out an issue to the team: “If you don’t have a strong block set on both sides, there’s no point in the middle coming through.” I’m sitting in the back, and they might as well be speaking Greek. I don’t know even the sports vocabulary of a spectator, much less a volleyball player. There are many big names in football, and even more in politics. Despite how often those are both in the spotlight, it’s rare to find someone whose actions deem them worthy of stardom in both worlds. That’s where Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid find themselves, standing or kneeling for something they believe in and suffering the consequences. Along with Kaepernick, Reid claims he was blacklisted from the NFL because of his protests against police violence and for social injustice. When Reid’s contract was up with the 49ers in 2017, he went through a period of being unsigned. While the former San Francisco 49ers player wasn’t in the spotlight like his…

    Ronaldo facing allegations

In the most recent wave of sexual assault allegations, another celebrity has been accused of sexual assaults: Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. Kathryn Mayorga claims that in 2009 Ronaldo sexually assaulted and then raped her in a hotel room in Las Vegas. Immediately following the incident, Mayorga contacted the Las Vegas Police Department and filed a report. Then, roughly six months later, Mayorga and lawyers representing Ronaldo sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). However, German News Outlet, Der Spiegel, caught wind of the story in 2017. Der Spiegel published the story, referring to Mayorga as Susie K. When the allegations come back to light, the Las Vegas Police Department reopened the…

The world of competitive air guitar championships

What comes to mind when the words“air guitar” are said? People waving their arms imitating their favorite musicians, or an acrobatic and difficult sporting event? The competitors in the World Air Guitar Championship fall into the second group. The World Air Guitar Championship was founded in the town of Oulu, Finland in 1996 as a joke, but has since become a worldwide sport. Contestants compete in a national tournament before they can go to the international championships that have contestants from 10 countries. The judges rate the contestants based on three categories: accuracy of their performance, choreography and “airness”, which is how well the performer brings the energy of the…
